Who We Are
Since 1933, the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County (HSMSC) has been rescuing animals suffering from cruelty and neglect and providing them with a second chance at life.  We offer a safe place to recover, nutritious food, and outstanding veterinary care to more than 100 animals at a time.
HSMSC staff and volunteers provide training, affection, and socialization to its rescued animals to prepare them for adoption into new and loving homes. A dedicated trainer uses positive methods for socializing scared and hurt animals, 125 volunteers walk and play with dogs each week, and more than 6,000 animals have been placed into loving forever homes since 2013.
Through the Humane Society’s community programs, over 5,000 children have learned to read canine body language and become responsible pet owners, and thousands of low-income Memphians have received affordable vaccinations for their pets via HSMSC vaccine clinic events.
