At the Children’s Education Center, we focus on creating environments where children feel calm, supported, and ready to learn. Funds raised will enhance therapeutic learning spaces that help students regulate, engage, and learn throughout their school day.
Located in Brookville, the Children’s Education Center includes two schools — Silver and Cissy — serving students from preschool through age 22. Children benefit from a blend of integrated and specialized education, therapeutic supports, and sensory-based learning experiences that help them develop academically, socially, and in everyday life skills.
Sensory Room Refurbishment in the Cissy Birnbaum Building
Walk funds will support a comprehensive refurbishment and modernization of the sensory room in the Cissy Birnbaum Building, which has been an important resource for students since the building opened in 2009. As student needs and sensory support practices have evolved, updates will ensure the space continues to reflect current best practices and effectively serve the children who rely on it. The sensory room is a specially designed environment with calming lighting, soft and tactile elements, and sensory experiences that help children regulate their bodies and emotions. This space is not used for academic instruction; rather, it is available when students need a supportive setting to reduce anxiety, manage sensory overload, and regain a sense of calm before returning to classroom activities. Enhancing this space ensures it remains a meaningful therapeutic resource that supports students’ emotional well-being.
Outdoor Sensory Learning Area for Preschool Students
Funds will also support the addition of fencing and enhancements to the preschool playground to create a safe outdoor sensory area. This dedicated space will allow young learners to explore movement, play, and sensory activities in the fresh air while feeling secure. Outdoor sensory engagement supports motor development, self-regulation, social interaction, and readiness for school routines — all cornerstones of early childhood development.
